Since 2004, the Partnership has focused on Risk and Crisis Communications as a critical element in coordinating and
agriculture emergency response. The Partnership developed message maps addressing livestock disease incidents and natural
disaster scenarios to assist public information officers and department executives in communicating with the media and
public. To complement the messages, the Partnership commissioned a Risk and Communication Pocket Guide to assist
executives and subject matter experts in developing concise, useable information for press conferences and interviews.
The latest crisis communications projects incorporates social media awareness and training designed to improve familiarity
and use of social media tools in disaster management. The crisis communication toolkit is a website that includes -
•
A model Crisis, Emergency and Risk Communication plan,
•
Outlines for developing message maps,
•
Discussions on how to incorporate social media,
•
Cases studies to understand effective practices and lessons learned from past events, and
•
Several relevant news feeds.
The Partnership’s social media communications consultant developed a “Social Media Webinar” to assist agencies who are
developing social media strategies for disaster response. The three-part series describes the process for implementing social
media strategy, including how to monitor social media feedback in decision points for informing response priorities, and
staying ahead of negative messaging with aggressive rumor control and reliable information for consumers.
